Brown Bag 4: Ethics Training for the Environmental Professional
Addressing Ethical Dilemmas and Installing a "Culture of Integrity"

Multiple accrediting programs including TNI's laboratory and field standards require laboratories to have a documented "ethics training" program addressing ethical dilemmas and improper, illegal, and unethical practices. How does management implement these requirements? What is a culture of integrity? How do managers instill a proper decision process in staff and spot potential vulnerabilities? This workshop helps answer these question. It provides valuable information on proper practices, conduct, and techniques to help resolve ethical dilemmas, and stresses practicing "ethics at the bench". Discussion topics include potential causes of scientific misconduct, examples of improper practices, differentiating between proper and improper practices, and proper scientific decision making as well as specific practices designed for early detection and prevention of laboratory wrongdoing. Real life examples of ethical dilemmas are presented as well as actual situations and the outcome of proper decision making and poor decision making.

This workshop is geared to participation by laboratory management and technical personnel, specifically supervisors, managers, and QA professionals as well as assessors from the private and public sectors.
